- First reaction to act three was in the beginning when Hamlet was being a complete douche bag to Ophelia. I can't help but feel sorry for her. However, as for the Hamlet, I find it hard to sympathize for him and his cause to regain his throne. I also found Hamlet's behavior quite strange in Scene 2 when he says to Ophelia "That’s a fair thought to lie between maids' legs.(That’s a nice thought to lie between a girl’s legs.)". His conversation with her is quite strange before the play. It's almost silly of him to say that before the Play starts. I despise his behavior toward Ophelia. I found it funny how Claudius and Polonius were snooping around thinking Hamlet was being driven mad by love and how they're just driven by their narrow beliefs of the explanation of Hamlet's "craziness".
- Polonius was definitely creeping up to people's beeswax, always snooping around. Turns out all that snoop'n finally caught up to him. I found a bit of Irony how Polonius said he was in a play once, and played as Julius Caesar. He said that in the play he was killed by Brutus. Heh, heh, turns out that he actually does die later on by Hamlet stabbed just so similar to how Julius Caesar was stabbed . Polonius was a dead man playing a role that was to be his fate as Julius Caesar. Heh heh.
- I have to say, I think the them of this act is simply revenge, and here's why. During the play, Hamlet was eager to see Claudius's reaction. This was his motive during the play. In scene 4 when he speaks to his mother, putting her in a total guilt trip. That's where Hamlets emotions and motives truly lie. His emotions of his father's death and hatred for Claudius. His motive for revenge.

Nice blog post. :) I feel silly saying it, but I didn't realize how rude Hamlet was to Ophelia until it was pointed out in class. I just thought that he was teasing her, but I think his tone was beyond teasing/tempting. It was interesting how you pointed out it was almost silly for Hamlet to say such a thing before the play started. Why would he make such a reference when the play was condemning Gertrude for doing that very thing? Interesting. Nice catch with the whole "Julius Caesar" reference, it was totally ironic.
ReplyDeleteAnd he uses the play the show his revenge with all his explanation to all from the start to the end toward Claudius so I thinks that is why he decided to seem Hamlet right away just to kill Hamlet before he kills him (Claudius). Just thought of that now. :)
ReplyDeleteI totally felt bad for Ophelia as well, Hamlet is such a rude little man. I felt like he was sharpening his claws on her, so he can be strong and mean enough to kill Claudius. It was very funny as well, Hamlet is very good at wordplay. And I agree with Polonius being a snoopy man, but I think it was suppose to be like comic relief as well, and it contributes to the idea of deception. It was totally ironic and funny, the whole situation about Julius and Brutus. And yes, vengeance was all over the place.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you that Hamlet is being a complete jerk with Ophelia but what if his reaction towards her would have been different, what would this show about Hamlet? Perhaps Hamlet did not have to be a complete asshole to her but what if he would have begged her or acted soft towards her, Hamlet would have shows that side to her and it would give us, the reader a different perception of him. This is when Hamlet decides to take step and get stronger which is why he is cruel to her. He is pretty much getting into "revenge" character and that includes being mean to Ophelia. At least that's the way i see it.
