DRJ #1 Hamlet

  • When reading this play for the first time, I really had a hard time understanding it from the book, so I got translations like everyone else. I became surprised on how much was going on between characters. They all seem to want something from each other and the drama that became of it. Hamlet seeing his fathers ghost and the
  • The protagonist is Hamlet. He tries to claim his throne of King of Denmark and all while others are trying to make sure he is sane. There's indeed a lot of spying done especially with Reynaldo and Poloniums. They also rely on Ophelia to spy for them because of Hamlets "love" interest. It's hard for me to find the motives. This family is crazy.
  • I think Shakespeare was showing the sides of family that no one expects. the trickery, the spying, and deceptions. Also all while it being a royal family, you can only imagine the drama thats happening all at once.

  1. I also had a very hard time understanding what was going on in the original language. I agree, Hamlet does seem to have a very...interesting bunch for family and friends. So you think one theme is the complications that occur within family when you get up close? I can totally see that.

  2. Whats funny about "the sides of family that no one expects. the trickery, the spying, and deceptions" is that even though that play was years and years ago it is still relevant today. Everyone has experienced family drama maybe not as intense as Hamlets or maybe even worse. What I think he is trying to say is that people get hurt by family because we let them in close, and we don't expect them to be so deceitful. I just typed this up and a very recent family altercation came to mind, shocks how relevant to today this play is.

  3. It can be a bit hard to read Shakespeare and decipher what is going on without it being time consuming. I found it easier with the translated version also. I have seen the Kenneth Branagh version of Hamlet before so to me that helped because it gave a visual. Here is a link to the movie I am referring to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116477/ . It is true that both of the families in the play have a bunch of drama.
